Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine experiencing what I have in the past few weeks as a student in Bangladesh.
The air is thick with anticipation, and the scent of revolution lingers as I stand amidst a sea of fellow students during this transition period following the fall of a fascist regime.
What began as a movement for quota reform quickly morphed into a mass uprising against a corrupt and overstaying government. The streets were filled with students from various universities, united by a common goal. The government’s brutal response, including crackdowns and police brutality, was meant to silence us, but it only ignited a fire within our hearts.
Being part of this historical movement felt like being part of something bigger than myself.
We were no longer just students; we were the voice of a generation demanding justice and fighting for a better future for our country. The unity and solidarity I experienced were overwhelming, despite the violence and clashes I have seen.
After many deaths, sacrifices, and struggles, the streets were filled with protesters, leading to the resignation of the fascist government. This brought a sweet moment of triumph but also many uncertainties.
The country was in chaos, with reports of vandalism, arson, and attacks surfacing, adding to the fear that law and order had been disrupted due to the power vacuum.
As a minority, this situation brought a renewed sense of vulnerability to me and my community. However, we remain united, trying to cope and help each other comprehend the situation. Our neighbors, students, the majority community, and other citizens are working together to defend ourselves.
Despite the chaos and anarchy, students have shown remarkable resilience and commitment to restoring law and order. We have stepped up to manage the situation by controlling traffic, ensuring the safe passage of emergency vehicles, and even guarding minority homes and shrines against robberies.
In a remarkable display of solidarity, we have not just protested but also actively managed the situation, proving that we are capable of protecting our communities and restoring order. Though many rumors are circulating heavily but we are trying to hold our nerves and dealing the situation.
A Glimmer of Hope Amidst Chaos
Good news is that the situation is improving day by day after the Interim Government, led by Nobel Laureate Prof. Dr. Muhammad Yunus—who shares my hometown—has taken oath!
Another unexpected and heartwarming event was receiving 2/3 emails from people on this platform, inquiring about my wellbeing during these troubling times. This overwhelming gesture has filled me with gratitude, and I hope to continue sharing in this platform as usual when everything is alright.
I am safe for now and hopeful to return to normal life soon. Witnessing and participating in these historic events has made me feel incredibly fortunate. Being part of this movement with a sense of purpose and determination has been a profound experience.
In these few weeks, I’ve realized the true power of students and our bravery for the right cause. Even I didn’t know I had this much within me a few weeks ago.
But one thing is certain: humans are both the best and worst species on earth.
I don’t know what the future holds, but What a time to be alive! What a country to live for!
